MEDIATOR
Mediator (Heb. 12:24)
3316. mesivth" mesiteµs; from 3319; an arbitrator,
a mediator:— mediator(6).
{Strongs Concordance}
MEDIATOR
mesites (3316), lit., “a go-between” (from mesos,
“middle,” and eimi, “to go”), is used
in two ways in the NT, (a) “one who mediates” between
two parties with a view to producing peace, as in 1 Tim. 2:5,
though more than mere “mediatorship” is in view, for
the salvation of men necessitated that the Mediator should Himself
possess the nature and attributes of Him towards whom He acts,
and should likewise participate in the nature of those for whom
He acts (sin apart); only by being possessed both of deity and
humanity could He comprehend the claims of the one and the needs
of the other; further, the claims and the needs could be met only
by One who, Himself being proved sinless, would offer Himself
an expiatory sacrifice on behalf of men; (b) “one who acts
as a guarantee” so as to secure something which otherwise
would not be obtained. Thus in Heb. 8:6; 9:15; 12:24 Christ is
the Surety of “the better covenant,” “the new
covenant,” guaranteeing its terms for His people.
In Gal. 3:19 Moses is spoken of as a “mediator,” and
the statement is made that “a mediator is not a mediator
of one,” v. 20, that is, of one party. Here the contrast
is between the promise given to Abraham and the giving of the
Law. The Law was a covenant enacted between God and the Jewish
people, requiring fulfillment by both parties. But with the promise
to Abraham, all the obligations were assumed by God, which is
implied in the statement, “but God is one.”¶
In the Sept., Job 9:33, daysman.¶ {Vine’s Expository}
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the
life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7If ye had known
me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye
know him, and have seen him.
Then they killed Jesus Christ. Which the forces of darkness hoped
would accomplish two things;
1. Keep them from being exposed any further.
2. Remove the people’s hope of obtaining a covenant with
God.
But instead their plan (plan of Satan), backfired. They were further
exposed, and our hope is secure in Christ!
Mark 15:38And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the
top to the bottom. 39 And when the centurion, which stood over
against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost,
he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
Heb. 10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into
the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way,
which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to
say, his flesh; 21 And having an high priest over the house of
God; 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of
faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and
our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the profession
of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to
good works:
We Can Obtain the New Covenant!
It didn’t take man too long to stray from the relationship
God intended to have with him. We see the peaceful beauty of the
garden experience unfold in Genesis. Then we see the influence
of evil interrupting that precious harmony. That evil has continued
to influence man, causing an adhering to practices other than
those prescribed by God. The following scripture shows Jesus exposing
some of the false religion practiced by the religious leaders
of the time.
Matt. 21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out
all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the
tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called
the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. 14
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed
them. 15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful
things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and
saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore
displeased, 16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say?
And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the
mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
These religious leaders felt that Jesus must be stopped so that
their false religion wouldn’t be completely exposed, removing
their dominance of the people, and keeping them in the realm of
death.
It is true that man had covenanted with death (through Satan),
but God had made a new covenant with man, and had plans of making
the enemies of his people footstools for them;
Psl. 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand,
until I make thine enemies thy footstool. 2 The LORD shall send
the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of
thine enemies.
Matt. 22:36For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD
said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine
enemies thy footstool.
But man was far from perfect, and unable to secure this New Covenant…
Rom. 3:10As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
We needed a means to obtain this new covenant of eternal life.
Heb. 10:12But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for
sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13From henceforth
expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14For by one
offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. 15Whereof
the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had
said before, 16This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their
hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17And their sins
and iniquities will I remember no more. 18Now where remission
of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
